Jumping into the world of becoming a digital nomad is an incredibly thrilling journey where you find flexibility, freedom, and adventure. However, building a sustainable career requires finding work that aligns with your skills, the current freelance market needs, and larger professional goals.
Remote roles have been available since the early 2000’s but only recently gained traction and awareness post-pandemic as more people sought to keep the comfort of working from home. While the culture continues to shift with employees moving back into the office, I anticipate the rise of freelancing will continue to grow as more workers seek freedom.
While everyone has a different skillset, I often recommend thinking outside of the box and leaning into skills that you can learn and are in demand. Becoming a digital nomad requires the ability to continuously learn and adapt to maintain a competitive edge.
If you think it is impossible - I assure you it is not. I used to be a nurse who worked at the bedside and transitioned into Project and Business Management! Was this the most straightforward path? No, absolutely not! But I invested in my education and training. At the end of the day, if you work a job that requires your onsite presence, you will be stuck working in-person jobs. When you learn a skill that does not require your in person presence, you will finally gain the freedom to work from anywhere.
With that being said, this post will dive into the top 10 remote roles for digital nomads to keep an eye out for in 2025.

Digital Marketing
Proper marketing techniques will make or break a business. Without marketing, there will be a lack of clients, lack of clients, results in a lack of revenue, and without revenue, a business cannot survive. It is no wonder that Digital Marketing is and continues to be a high-demand skill and service needed by literally EVERY business.
This might surprise you but I have worked for a few digital marketing agencies in my freelancing career - and not every agency owner studied marketing. In fact, some agency owners were subject matter experts in their field and THEN learned about marketing and started a Marketing Agency in their niche.
I myself have taken Marketing courses to stay abreast of trends, best practices and be able to speak to Marketing clients preferences.
Some of the courses I would recommend are:
2. Social Media Marketing
This goes hand-in-hand with Digital Marketing but is very niched down to provide one specific type of service - Social Media Marketing. Statistics show that the majority of consumers find brands through social media - which explains why more and more businesses are turning to social media to establish an online presence.
More than 99% of small businesses in America are owned by small business owners, which means a business owner (more often than not) would seek to hire a Social Media manager to perform this task rather than doing it themself. And places you as a new freelancer in a prime position to offer a much sought after service.
A couple of my favorite social media teachers are:
3. Content Writing & Copywriting
With the rise of ChatGPT you would think that writing would potentially become an obsolete skill HOWEVER, I disagree. The reliance on ChaptGPT has made true writers needed now more than ever. ESPECIALLY for subject matter experts. As a freelancer on Upwork, one of the most common jobs I see is for writers in specialty niches like healthcare, and technology, with the need for copywriting, white papers, ad copy, etc.
And if you are wondering why organizations need writers - if you look around you will see that writers touch every aspect of the consumer journey from blogs, to ads, product descriptions, and email campaigns - I could go on.
One of my very first gigs as a freelancer was actually for medical writing. While I did not have formal training in writing, I always had a knack for it and created a mini-portfolio with some of my work and that was what helped me land the gig.
A couple of resources that may be beneficial are:

4. Web Development & Design
Okay, before you write this one off - let me tell you a story about a Veterinarian nurse who was burnt out and wanted to pursue location freedom opportunities. Erica is the owner of Big Cat Creative and became a SELF-TAUGHT website designer. She mastered SquareSpace (a web-hosting service) and launched a lucrative business that sells website templates for a fraction of the cost. Her business model is volume and she filled the market gap of helping small business owners launch in a budget friendly way.
My point is - YOU can find remote only jobs - BUT you MUST think outside of the box.
5. Consulting
If you have been performing a job for at least 5 years and can teach someone the ins and outs of your job - consider yourself a ‘Subject Matter Expert’. Being an expert in your field is the PERFECT opportunity to package up all of your knowledge and teach, audit, or build a program for another organization.
Here are some examples:
A personal friend and teacher who is a consultant and teaches entire schools how to improve their curriculum → Stem Detective
(while his business model is largely in-person there are online educators who need help building/developing curriculum).
A nurse providing healthcare consulting services to Ai app → that’s me! with Writer Ai
A nurse leading the efforts in business development and operations → also me! with Foundation for Sickle Cell Disease Research
The key here is that you need to be strategic in HOW you present yourself.
Think of it as putting all of your best work together in a portfolio, showing this to potential clients, and delivering true results to continue getting repeat clients and business.
6. Video Editing
This is for ALL of my content creators out there - video editing is a HIGHLY sought-after skill!
ESPECIALLY if you can create high-quality, eye-catching videos. There are SO many content creators, large corporations, and small businesses alike that simply do not have time to spend hours every day or week to edit their content.
With the growing demand of having an ‘online presence’ this field is predicted to continue to grow into 2025. This is a competitive field - so my best advice would be:
Master your craft
and Create a signature style
Having a signature style is the best way to speak to your targeted niche and draw clients to you.
7. Bookkeeping / Accounting
Imagine going into an office every day to punch numbers.. I think not!
Accountants have so much power to perform their jobs remotely as accounting is largely integrated into software and spreadsheets. For this path, you could find an organization that offers remote roles OR much like all of the other roles on this list - you could branch out and build your own freelancing business.
I am not an accounting expert but I would say having your CPA license will make you way more marketable in the freelancing world.
Accounting is a task needed in EVERY business across the world and is projected to experience a shortage in the coming years which means …
this is your change to fill a gap in an up and coming market!
To learn all things about how to build your bookkeeping business
→ check out Ben Robinson, one of the pioneer OG’s in the digital world who built his Bookkeeping courses way back in 2014. I have been following him since 2015 and he has soared in teaching countless individuals how to build, scale, optimize, and transform their bookkeeping businesses.
8. Data Analyst
This one is quite obvious, but this is and will continue to be a high-demand role in 2025 and beyond. Every business needs the ability to make informed decisions that are based on hard facts and data. My advice here would be - tap into your current work experience - and take courses that will teach you how to use software and analyze data.
To make the best use of WHAT courses to take to learn I would advise:
Scope out Upwork and search for current open jobs to see what software are most cited and what skills are most requested.
Then review Coursera for courses that align with the most frequently cited skills.
Dig in and learn as much as you can!
Offer your services at a lower cost (for the first couple of clients).
Build your portfolio and raise your rates!
9. Project Management
Now for my personal favorite and bread & butter!
What exactly is project management? Think of it like this. Have you ever heard a big vision or a big goal? And felt overwhelmed or had no idea where to start? Or have you started a project and never finished it?
A project manager is the glue that holds many projects together in a business. The ‘quarterback’ pushes people along to deliver their tasks, puts all of the tasks together, and ensures everyone stays on track to a finish line.
Project management is perfect for someone who loves to organize! And is needed across every industry and various sizes of companies.
The steps to becoming a project manager are not as straight forward - but my best advice would be, wherever you currently work, start taking on projects to learn. Or shadow a project manager to see what a day in their life looks like.

Wrapping up
There are so many ways to break into freelancing and these top roles only scratch the surface! In fact, check out this article published by Upwork themselves with the
25 highest-paying jobs in 2025.
What you will find in common with all of the above jobs is that they are needed across any industry and any size of business.
It is okay to start out small to build your portfolio. But after your first two clients, focus on ‘packaging’ your services and developing yourself as an expert in your field. Becoming the expert with client testimonials changes the game entirely. This will shift you from the freelancing ‘gig’ economy into a lucrative and sustainable career.
My hope for you is that you challenge the norm.
Consider the possibility that there have been many before you who learned how to work for themselves.
If they were able to figure it out, so can you ♡
